Abstract

This study was done to demonstrate the importance of providing psychological care in regard to the hope in cancer patients. Therefore the study was designed to test the correlation among hope, health promoting behavior & quality of life and to identify other sociodemographic variables on quality of Life.
The subjects were 164 stomach cancer patients who visited outpatient clinics of a university hospital in Seoul.
The following instruments were used in the study after some adaptation : Nowotney¢¥s Hope scale, Walker and other¢¥s Health Promotion Lifestyle Profile and Noh¢¥s Quality of Life Scale.
The data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe¢¥s, Pearson¢¥s correlation coefficient & stepwise multiple regression, using the SAS program. The results & conclusions are as follows :
1. The scores on the hope scale ranged from 51 to 111 with a mean of 84.67 (SD : 9.41)
2. The scores on the health promoting behabvior scale ranged from 55 to 145 with a mean of 107.91 (SD : 16.50).
3. The scores on the quality of life scale ranged from 115 to 243 with a mean of 177.84 (SD : 25.35).
4. In the relationship between social-demographic and hope were significant difference in religion (t=4.73,p<.001).
5. In the relationship between social-demographic and health promoting behavior were significant difference in Age(F=4.91, P<.001)& religion (t=2.83, P001).
6. In the relationship between social demographic & quality of life were significant difference in religion(t=1.66, P<.05).
7. There were significant correlations among hope, health promoting behavior & quality of hfe(Y= .50.64, p<.001).
8. The main factors influencing on the quality of life were hope(44%) & health promoting behavior (3%).
In conclusion, the results propose the processes from hope to quality of life through health promoting behaviors and hope intervention program is needed to improve the quality of life in cancer patients.
